Pedro Menendez de Aviles founded St Augustine on September 8, 1565, having sighted the coast eleven days earlier on the saint's feast day, and it is the oldest continuously occupied European settlement in the contiguous United States. The Castillo de San Marcos was begun in 1672 and finished in 1695, built of coquina, a shell stone quarried nearby and burned for lime on site. In 1738 Governor Manuel de Montiano established Fort Mose two miles north, the first legally recognized free Black settlement in what is now the United States. Henry Flagler finished two hotels here in 1887, and the Ponce de Leon was among the first electrified buildings in the country.
