The Illinois State Fair takes over the grounds on Sangamon Avenue for eleven days each August, and a good deal of local work bends around it. A remote appointment moves with a week like that instead of competing with it, since there is no drive at either end. Aura sprays and blends are made up in Michigan and mailed to you.
Abraham Lincoln came to Springfield in 1837 and spent the next twenty-four years here as a lawyer and a politician. In 1839 the city became the third capital of Illinois, largely through the work of Lincoln and a group of legislators called the Long Nine because they stood fifty-four feet between them. He is buried at Oak Ridge Cemetery. On August 14, 1908 three days of rioting killed at least sixteen people here, nine of them Black and seven white, and the shock of a race riot in Lincoln's own city was a direct spur to the founding of the NAACP. Frank Lloyd Wright built the Dana-Thomas House here in 1902 and 1903.
