Belfast was incorporated on June 29, 1773 and renamed after Belfast in the north of Ireland, which was then the principal port of embarkation for emigrants from that part of the country. Shoe manufacturing came next, then poultry: after the Second World War Maplewood and Penobscot Poultry made this a processing town, until the poultry business collapsed in the mid-1970s. The Belfast and Moosehead Lake Railroad opened in 1871, carried its last regular passengers in 1960 and stopped altogether in 2005, and the city itself was incorporated on August 17, 1850, the eighth in Maine.
