A historic mill city on the Saco River, Biddeford has turned its red-brick textile mills into galleries, breweries, and maker spaces while keeping the quiet shoreline of Biddeford Pool, Fortune's Rocks Beach, and the East Point bird sanctuary close by. The blend of coastal air and creative energy supports a naturally restorative pace.
University of New England students, mill-district neighbors, and families who trace their roots to Quebec all share this bend of the river. Remote work suits a city whose population swells every June, because your session never competes with July parking downtown. Blends leave our Michigan studio by post, mixed to your own intentions.
Biddeford was first incorporated as the Town of Saco in 1653, then reorganized in 1718 under the present name, borrowed from Bideford in Devon. The Saco River drops forty feet in two falls here, which is what put the mills where they are: the Laconia Company from 1845, the Pepperell Company from 1850, and something near 12,000 textile workers at the height of it. French Canadians came down from Quebec to work those mills, alongside Irish and Albanian arrivals, and the Franco-American culture that resulted is still marked every year at La Kermesse. The University of New England now runs Maine's only medical school here.
