Benjamin Milliken and Benjamin Joy brought a party of English entrepreneurs to the Union River around 1763 intending to dam it and build sawmills, and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts incorporated the town in 1800 as Ellsworth, for Oliver Ellsworth, Connecticut delegate to the 1787 convention and later the third Chief Justice. By 1859 there were nine sawmills. A fire in 1933 destroyed most of the downtown commercial district east of the river, and it was rebuilt in brick, much of it Art Deco. Colonel John Black's house of 1824 to 1827, designed after Asher Benjamin, is now the Woodlawn Museum, and the High Street business district grew up on the road everybody takes to Acadia.
