Set on Marsh Island between the Penobscot and Stillwater rivers just north of Bangor, Orono is the home of the University of Maine, the state's flagship campus. It is a riverside college town where woodland trails and flowing water keep everyday life close to nature.
The town takes its name from Joseph Orono, a Penobscot leader remembered here long before the university arrived. Many people find a remote session easier to keep than one that needs a car and a parking space. An attunement comes to you as digital material, yours on campus and wherever you land afterward.
The town was incorporated on March 12, 1806 and named for Joseph Orono, a sachem of the Penobscot nation whose people had lived on this ground long before any of it was incorporated. Orono sits where the Stillwater meets the Penobscot, and through the nineteenth century the sawmills on both rivers ran on that water while logs came downriver to be shipped out through the coastal ports. The University of Maine was established here in 1865 as the state's land-grant institution. It is a small town with a large campus in it, which shapes everything about how the place feels in August and in October.
