The township was incorporated on April 4, 1859 out of Plantations F, G and H, taking its name from the French for peninsula. Through the last three decades of the nineteenth century agriculture took over the whole of Aroostook County, and a starch factory opened here in 1874 to process the potato crop. On August 11, 1978 the Double Eagle II lifted off from a field in Presque Isle with three men aboard and made the first successful transatlantic balloon crossing. The Aroostook State Normal School started a two-year teacher preparation course in 1903 and became the University of Maine at Presque Isle in 1968.
