Built along the Mousam River in inland York County, Sanford grew up around the Goodall textile mills and still holds the village of Springvale within its bounds. Known as the town that refused to die after the mills left, it carries a resilient, community-minded character close to Maine's lakes and back roads.
Sanford became Maine's youngest city just over a decade ago, and many residents still commute toward Portsmouth or the coast. Sanford was incorporated as a town in 1768 and named for Peleg Sanford, who had been willed the land in 1696. Thomas Goodall, born in Britain, set up mills here in 1867 making carriage robes and blankets, then mohair plush for railroad seats, carpets, draperies, auto fabric and uniform cloth. Burlington Mills bought Sanford Mills in 1954 and closed them, putting 3,600 people out of work, and the recovery was dramatized on NBC in November 1955 in an episode called The Town That Refused to Die. Voters approved a new charter on November 6, 2012, the change took effect on January 1, 2013, and Maura A. Herlihy became the first mayor a week later.
