The name comes from the Southern Paiute Pah-Rimpi, water rock, for the artesian wells that made the valley usable. Those wells supported ranches of more than a thousand acres growing alfalfa and cotton and running stock. It stayed genuinely isolated far later than most of Nevada: until the 1960s there was no paved road in and no telephone service beyond a single radio transmitter in a phone booth. State Route 160 to Las Vegas and SR 372 toward Shoshone in California arrived late in that decade. Its elevation keeps it out of the worst of the heat that Death Valley, just over the line, is known for.
