Old Deaf School Park downtown is known to everyone as the Topiary Park, and it is the only place where a painting has been rebuilt in shrubs. James T. Mason, working with Elaine Mason, began in 1989 by raising artificial hills and digging a pond to stand in for the Seine, then shaping evergreens into Georges Seurat's A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte: fifty-four people, eight boats with sails of clematis, three dogs, a monkey and a cat. The Ohio School for the Deaf stood on this ground until it outgrew the site in 1953, and a fire in 1981 took all but one of its buildings.
