Christian Deardorff, a farmer from Virginia by way of Iowa, and his wife Matilda arrived in 1851 and claimed six hundred and forty acres between Mount Scott and Scouters Mountain. The place was called Deardorff Valley, then in 1902 Christilla Valley, from Chris and Tilla, which is a plain enough way to name a place after two people. The name it has now came later and from a different direction: real estate promoters put Happy Valley into circulation around 1909, so the pleasant-sounding name is advertising rather than folklore. The city incorporated in 1965 and stayed small until the late 1990s, when it became one of the fastest-growing places in the state.
