Pendleton is the seat of Umatilla County, built on the south bank of the Umatilla River in the foothills of the Blue Mountains in northeastern Oregon. The railroad arrived in 1889 and turned the town into a wheat and cattle centre, and it remains one, alongside food processing and lumber. It is also the home of Pendleton Woolen Mills, which began as a wool-scouring plant serving the many sheep ranches around it, then started weaving blankets for trade with neighbouring Native nations before expanding into clothing. Since 1910 the town has hosted the Pendleton Round-Up each September, now counted among the ten largest rodeos in the world, which is why a place of this size fills so completely for one week a year.
