Thomas Penn asked on September 8, 1751 that the new town be called Easton, after Easton Neston in Northamptonshire, the family estate of his wife Lady Juliana Fermor Penn, and it was laid out in 1752 where the Lehigh runs into the Delaware. The Lenape called this ground Lechauwitank, the place at the forks, and lost it through the Walking Purchase of 1737; the Treaty of Easton was negotiated here during the French and Indian War. On July 8, 1776 at noon the Declaration of Independence was read aloud in the square, one of only three places where that happened. Lafayette College was established on the hill in 1826.
