The French built Fort Presque Isle here in 1753, taking the name from the peninsula curving into the lake, presque isle meaning almost an island. In the War of 1812 the fleet that won the Battle of Lake Erie was built on this shore, four schooner-rigged gunboats and two brigs, under Daniel Dobbins of Erie and Noah Brown of Boston, and Oliver Hazard Perry sailed them out. Three different railroad track gauges met in Erie in the 1850s, and when standardization threatened the jobs that came from breaking bulk here, citizens tore up track and set fires in what became known as the Gauge War. The Erie Maritime Museum opened in 1996 with a recreation of the 1813 brig Niagara.
