Samuel Gettys, an Irishman, settled here in 1760 and kept a tavern at the crossroads. Gettysburg College was founded by the Lutheran theologian Samuel Simon Schmucker, who also started the seminary in town. Dwight Eisenhower kept a farm of six hundred and ninety acres just outside, retired to it in 1961 and lived there until 1969.
