The British built a fort here in 1758 during the campaign to push the French off the forks of the Ohio, and named it for Field Marshal John Ligonier. The borough was formally established on April 10, 1834. The square at its center, the Diamond, was being used as a corral for horses and wagons until 1894, when the town turned it into a park with a bandstand, which is what it still is.
