Media has been the seat of Delaware County since March 11, 1850, when the county government moved here from Chester and the borough was incorporated on the same day. At incorporation it made the sale of malt and spirituous liquors unlawful inside its limits, and it stayed a dry town from the beginning. Trolleys came through in the 1890s and early 1900s and still run down the middle of State Street. On March 8, 1971 the Citizens' Commission to Investigate the FBI broke into the bureau's small office here and released thousands of documents to newspapers, which is how the public learned COINTELPRO existed.
