William Penn laid the city out in 1682 between the two rivers, and his surveyor Thomas Holme drew the grid of long straight streets running nearly due east to west and north to south that the city still runs on. Penn named the east-west streets after the trees growing here, and he wanted the result to feel like an English country town rather than a crowded European city, with room around the houses for gardens and orchards; he called it a greene countrie towne. He set aside five public squares, renamed in 1824 as Penn, Franklin, Washington, Rittenhouse and Logan. Fairmount Park with the adjoining Wissahickon Valley runs to 2,052 acres.
