Selden T. and George W. Scranton started an iron works here in the 1840s making nails, then switched to T-rails for the Erie Railroad and became one of the country's major suppliers of rail. Anthracite followed, and the city became the capital of that industry. In 1886 Scranton got the first successful continuously operating electrified streetcar system in the nation, which is where The Electric City comes from; the lines consolidated in 1896 and ran until 1954. The Knox Mine Disaster of January 1959 effectively ended deep mining across northeastern Pennsylvania. Steamtown National Historic Site keeps the railroad half of that story on the old yard.
