The Farmers' High School of Pennsylvania was founded in 1855 on four hundred acres in what was then Harris Township, renamed the Agricultural College of Pennsylvania in 1862, and the town grew up around it; the borough separated from College Township on August 29, 1896. The name has been questioned by its own institution. In 1953 the university president Milton S. Eisenhower tried to persuade residents to rename the place Mount Nittany, after the mountain that closes the valley on the east and gives the Nittany Lions their name, and the referendum failed.
