Hardwick's charter carries the date August 19, 1781, and it named Danforth Keyes along with 66 other grantees. Several of those men had come from Hardwick in Massachusetts. Granite reshaped the place after the Civil War. Quarries in Woodbury gave up the stone, while the dressing and finishing went on here, beside Granite Junction at the meeting point of the rail lines. By 1906 the Woodbury Granite Company had roughly 1,200 people on that work.
