The town was chartered by a New Hampshire grant on July 7, 1761 as Killington, renamed Sherburne in 1800 after the landholder Colonel Benjamin Sherburne, and changed back by act of the Vermont General Assembly on March 2, 1999, effective that July. Killington Ski Resort on the mountain above is the largest ski area in the eastern United States. The voters here have twice decided to secede from Vermont and join New Hampshire, which is a way of registering a view about property taxes that few towns attempt. Neither vote took effect.
