Colonial Governor Benning Wentworth chartered Middlebury on November 2, 1761, and the name records its position between Salisbury and New Haven. Middlebury College was founded in 1800 and runs the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference through the summers. The falls on Otter Creek in the middle of town drove a cotton factory, a sawmill, a gristmill, a pail factory, a paper mill, a woolen factory, an iron foundry and a marble quarry over the course of the nineteenth century.
