Known as the Marble City at the western edge of Vermont's Green Mountains, Rutland pairs a historic downtown of murals and the restored Paramount Theatre with quick access to Green Mountain National Forest trails for hiking, biking, and skiing.
Rutland turns the whole valley out downtown for its Halloween parade each October, a tradition the city has kept up for decades. A distance session needs nothing from you but a date, a time, and a room where you can shut the door. Blends mixed for you in Michigan follow by mail.
Rutland was chartered in 1761 and named for John Manners, third Duke of Rutland, and settled in 1770. Modest marble deposits were known early, but the find that mattered came in the 1830s in what is now West Rutland, and once the railroad arrived in 1851 the city became one of the leading marble producers in the world, which is why it is called the Marble City. It was incorporated as Vermont's third city on November 18, 1892, with John A. Mead as first mayor. The quarries closed through the 1980s and 1990s, and Killington is a short run east on Route 4.
