Set along the shores of Lake Champlain just south of Burlington, Shelburne is a quiet agricultural town of rolling farm fields, home to the sprawling Shelburne Museum and the 1,400-acre working landscape of Shelburne Farms. Its lakeside, land-connected character already leans toward slow, natural, and mindful living.
An entire steamboat sits on dry land at the museum, hauled two miles overland one winter and never floated again. Some things stay put, and you can too, because sessions ask for no travel. Sprays are prepared at our Michigan bench and posted toward the bay.
Governor Benning Wentworth chartered Shelburne to Jesse Hallock and 64 associates on August 18, 1763. William Seward Webb built the estate that became Shelburne Farms on the lake shore, and his daughter-in-law Electra Havemeyer Webb founded the Shelburne Museum, which in 1955 had the steamboat Ticonderoga hauled overland to sit permanently on dry ground. That single act of moving a lake steamer across fields is the museum in miniature. The town runs along Lake Champlain, which shaped both its commerce and everything built on it.
