The northernmost land action of the Civil War happened here on October 19, 1864, when Confederate raiders came down from Canada and robbed the banks, an event still called the St. Albans Raid. The city was the depot, operations center and repair shop of the Vermont and Canada Railroad, and in the years when more than 200 trains a day came through it was simply the Rail City. It was incorporated as a city in 1902, taking two square miles out of the surrounding town. The Vermont Maple Festival runs each late April, and the Sap Run covers 8.2 miles down from Swanton.
