Royal Governor Benning Wentworth chartered Stowe on June 8, 1763. Mount Mansfield, the highest peak in Vermont, rises above the town and carries the resort across its flank and over onto Spruce Peak. The Civilian Conservation Corps cut the Bruce Trail in 1933 and the Nose Dive in 1934, and a single chairlift opened in 1940, replacing the rope tows and the two and a half mile walk up that skiers had accepted until then. Maria von Trapp settled here and the Trapp Family Lodge is still on the hillside, and the 8.5-kilometer Recreation Path was finished in 1989 for $680,000.
