A group of Methodist business leaders founded Northwestern University in 1851 along with the Garrett Biblical Institute, then in 1854 submitted plans for a city to be named after one of their number, John Evans; the request was granted in 1857. The temperance movement that followed left a long mark: Frances Willard ran the Woman's Christian Temperance Union from here, and Evanston stayed a dry town from 1858 until 1972, which is a hundred and fourteen years.
