Skokie began as Niles Centre, incorporated under that name in 1888. A referendum on November 15, 1940 put two names to residents, Skokie and Devonshire, and Skokie won. Marsh is what the word means in Potawatomi. Older maps label the area Chewab Skokie, which likely reads as great marsh. In 1977 a neo-Nazi group announced plans to march here, in a village where many Holocaust survivors had settled, and the dispute reached the Supreme Court as National Socialist Party of America v. Village of Skokie, among the hardest First Amendment questions the justices have taken up. No such march ever happened in the village. Skokie is also home to the Illinois Holocaust Museum and Education Center, which opened its doors April 19, 2009.
