Old Fort Western has stood on the east bank of the Kennebec since the 1750s, long before Augusta became the capital. English colonists built the blockhouse called Fort Western at Cushnoc on the east bank of the Kennebec in 1754, at the height of the French and Indian War. The town was incorporated in February 1797 as Harrington and renamed Augusta that August, after Pamela Augusta Dearborn, daughter of Henry Dearborn. Maine became a state in 1820 and Augusta was chosen as its capital in 1827, beating Portland, Brunswick and Hallowell. The legislature kept meeting in Portland until the Charles Bulfinch State House was finished between 1829 and 1832, and the city sits at the head of tide, which is why spring flooding has always been a downtown problem.
