The town was incorporated as Eden on February 23, 1796 and renamed Bar Harbor on March 3, 1918, after the sand bar that appears at low tide and lets you walk across to Bar Island. By 1880 there were 30 hotels, and the Gilded Age brought Rockefellers, Morgans and Vanderbilts, with Beatrix Farrand designing the gardens. On October 17, 1947 sparks at a cranberry bog near Town Hill started a fire that took 67 cottages, five historic hotels and over 10,000 acres of Acadia National Park. The largest parts of Acadia are still within the town, along with College of the Atlantic, the Jackson Laboratory and the MDI Biological Laboratory.
