The peninsula was settled in 1632 as a fishing and trading village called Casco, and in 1786 the residents of Falmouth Neck formed a separate town and named it Portland after the Isle of Portland off Dorset. On July 4, 1866 a fire that started during the Independence Day celebrations destroyed most of the commercial district, the fourth such fire the city had suffered, which is why the motto on the seal is Resurgam, I will rise again. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow got his start as a poet here in the early nineteenth century. A city that has burned four times and kept the same motto is telling you something about itself.
