High desert air runs dry and bright along the Deschutes, where three old mill smokestacks still mark the river and Mount Bachelor holds snow deep into spring. Sessions come to you, so no drive over the pass is needed. Flower essence blends are mixed to order in Michigan and posted whenever you want them close at hand.
John Y. Todd bought this land off an earlier claimant and called his ranch Farewell Bend, which was what people crossing the country called the place where the Deschutes could be forded. When the town applied for a post office in 1886 the postal service shortened it to Bend because another Oregon town already had the longer name. Two big mills opened within a month of each other in 1916, Shevlin-Hixon in March and Brooks-Scanlon in April, cutting ponderosa pine off more than two hundred thousand acres and running better than five hundred million board feet a year at the peak. Shevlin-Hixon sold out in 1950; the last mill closed in 1994.
