Methodist missionaries under Jason Lee founded Salem in 1842 on the Willamette at the site of a Kalapuya village called Chemeketa, place of rest, and rendered that into the biblical Salem, from the Hebrew for peace. The school they built on what is now the Willamette University campus grew into the Oregon Institute, which housed the first session of the territorial legislature and the first territorial court before being chartered as Willamette University in 1853, the oldest in the state. William Willson claimed the land that now holds the university, the Capitol and the downtown, and gave part of it for a territorial capitol building. Salem became territorial capital in 1851 and was confirmed as the state capital by popular vote in 1864.
