Northfield rests in a Green Mountain valley along the Dog River and has been home to Norwich University since 1866, giving it a true college-town energy. Its covered bridges, riverside setting, and small downtown keep everyday life close to the outdoors.
Paine Mountain rises straight above the village, and the cadet routine at Norwich keeps a clock much of the town works around. Reiki happens wherever you already are, at whatever time of day is genuinely free. Your blend is mixed in Michigan and mailed, arriving on its own time rather than yours.
Charles Paine, whose father Elijah ran the woolen mill, was president of the Vermont Central Railroad and put the line and its headquarters through Northfield in the 1840s, employing hundreds, and then the railroad moved to St. Albans in 1852 and the population fell. Slate quarrying carried the town through the 1860s and 1870s, the first granite shed went up in 1889, more than 525 men worked granite by the First World War, and the last finishing works closed in 1999. Norwich University moved here in 1866 and is still the town's anchor. Five covered bridges survive, including Stony Brook of 1899, the last kingpost truss covered bridge built on a Vermont public highway.
