Known as the Granite Capital of the World, Barre sits in the central Vermont hills just southeast of Montpelier, a hardworking city shaped by generations of skilled stonecutters and its famous gray granite quarries. That heritage of patient, careful craft gives the community a steady, down-to-earth character.
People walk Hope Cemetery here the way other towns walk a sculpture park, reading memorials the local carvers cut by hand. Reiki reaches you at home, so nothing about a session depends on the weather or the road. Your blend is mixed in Michigan and posted once it is ready.
The granite at Millstone Hill was found soon after the War of 1812, a deposit four miles long, two miles wide and ten miles deep, and it pulled in stonecutters from Italy, Scotland, Spain, Scandinavia, Greece, Lebanon and Canada. The population went from 2,060 in 1880 to 6,790 in 1890 to about 10,000 by 1894. Barre was set off from the town and incorporated as a separate city in 1895, it hosted the Quarry Workers' International Union, elected Socialist mayors in 1916 and 1929, and fought the 1922 granite strike to something like a draw. Hope Cemetery is where the carvers show what they could do, headstone by headstone.
